Coombing the beach
of Praia de Cabral takes you, without escape, to the ruins of the Chappel Stª Fátima. Starting Point is Riba d' Olt (on top of the hill), more precisely the little square next to the post office [CORREI]. The streight road ì to Hotel Marine Club leads you the beach . About 100 meter before reaching the hotel's entrance, an elevated toomb is lying next to the road. Julia Maria Pettingal, the daughter of the british judge in charge of the mixed comission of abolition of slavery is burried here. She was one of the few victims of a devastating yellow fever epidemic in 1845. That's what official history states. If we follow the report of the doctor, it seems more likely she died of his treatment. The graves of the jewish Ben O'Liel family are surrounded by a wall. While the older ones are still chisseled in Hebraic, the writings on the younger ones are in Portuguese. The hotel was so nice to build a little pathway around it on the seaside ëé , starting at the parking and preventing hikers to enter the compound. On top of the rocky shore, the track ì finds ist way to the Chappel. |
