Outline of Tracks
|
The relatively comfortable track from Canto de Fajã via Assomada de Mançebo to Fragata of continued medium-altitude provides nice varied views over the agriculturally most active irrigated valleys. In Fragata one dips into a society without wheel, getting a good impression of traditional lifestyle in remote areas. Ascents and descents are limited and the track should be manageable even to people not fully trained in mountaineering. There are three alternatives to finish the full-day excursion: Rª dos Calhaus - Monte Gordo - Cachaço (202 and 201), Praia Branca (204), Rª Prata (205). Starting point is a crossing on main-road through Fajã de Cima, with a signpost "Pico Agudo". [AGUD01] (493 m) After only 100m ç on the secondary road, a bifurcation follows and one has to take the slightly ascending í road up to the point ç where it becomes a mule-track that climbs Assomada de Mançebo [MANCEB] (785 m) in serpentines. The following descent passes by the houses Cruzinha, and (in the fifth cut counted from Assomada de Mançebo) reaches the ground of Rª de Fragata where there is an irrigation tank. After five minutes of ascent on the opposite slope, one meets the track down to Rª Prata (205) [FRAG12] (485m). Another 10 minutes í uphill and the crossing of paths to continue to Rª dos Calhaus (202) or Praia Branca (204) is reached. [FRAG11] (590 m).
