Outline of Tracks
|
With its 1312 meters of altitude, Monte Gordo is almost always able to keep its baldhead above the clouds, offering a wonderful panorama over São Vicente, Santo Antão and sometimes even the Pico d Antónia on Santiago Island and the Pico of Fogo. Initially, a good forest-road leads through the richest forests of the island. Later, a steep path through endemic tortoi leads to the exposed top with its antennas. While normally a harmless walk, Monte Gordo ensures that proper respect is shown to it by strong icy winds, trying to blow the hiker off track. In any case, one should take along a full water-reserve and complete equipment. Clouds may blur visibility within seconds. Starting point is the water point at the village health post of Cachaço where "Água do Torno OP-BH 1972" is written. [CACHAC] (706m) Only 50 meters away ê on the main road, the forest road between quarry-stone walls ç separates. [GORD01] Serpentines take it up to the watchmens house casa de guarda [GORD02] (900m), where a barrier limits access to pedestrians. About an hour later, a dry crater-like depression caldeirinha with a single house is reached. 100m ç further on, two tracks leave the road [GORD05] (1048m). Describing a rectangle (we?) turn into the forest and immediately uphill ê between trees and Tortoi. At the following ridge, a wonderful view is offered over Hortelã, Tarrafal and the southern peninsula. The track follows the ridge to the top. [GORDO] (1312m). There are possibilities to climb down from the top to the West to meet the track (202) to Fragata. [GORD08] (1027m) But this pathless track is much worse and difficult to find. Only for the "bulldozers" among the hikers, the track may be a few minutes quicker. The view over the western summits is a goody. Following common sense, it is certainly better to turn back to Caldeirinha and start track 202 from there. |
