Historial Church of Queimadas

Fajã is the largest agricultural area of the island. In the upper parts, insensible precipitation out of stagnating clouds allows decent dry land farming. The lower parts are irrigated from a tunnel gallery built in the 1980s.

Between Cachaço e Fajã de Baixo field-paths are used, accompanied by rural buildings and dragon trees. Later one continues over the small road descending to the village of Queimadas with its hall-church built in 1745 and its strange simple clock tower.

One may continue over track 109 to reach Vila da Rª Brava.

Starting point is the water point at the village health post of Cachaço, where "Água do Torno OP-BH 1972" is written. [CACHAC] (706m). After a few meters î , the access road turns ì in direction to the chapel. At the school, one leaves the road and enters between houses an unpaved path é accompanied by walls of quarry-stones. [CACH01] Over several crossings, maintain direction é . Where there is a garage in Lombo Pelado one meets a minor road. [PELA01] (580m). 200 m ì downhill, pass by the bifurcation towards Assomada de Gamboesa. Where the road turns to the west, continue straight ahead é . Further downhill and later turning ì the track reaches Fajã de Baixo. Only 5 minutes later on the main road downhill ì the bifurcation to Queimadas is reached. [FAJA05] After the pass of Queimadas Serrôd [FAJA11] (255m) serpentines facilitate the way down to the little church of Queimadas. [QUEIM9] (110m) (shop, telephone)
