Society Famines in the 1940s and 1950s are responsable for very week age cohorts born before 1949. Thus, there still are very few elderly an accordingly only a few social institutions caring for them. Nwevertheless, this will change in the near future and the number of elderly to care for will increase rapidly. It is not so rate that, due to emigration, elderly are left behind in an environment without younger family members. Facilities for the Elderly Until today, mainly day-care is offered and elderly people receive stimuli, regular meals and occupational care. Quite impressive is the work of the Cape Verdean Red Cross Societey (Cruz Vermelha) in São Vicente / Ribeirinha, where mainly homeless elderly have found their home. |
