Recently
Cidade Velha has been renamed "Cidade da
Ribeira Grande de Santiago". This was the
name it bore
in the early times of the colonial Portuguese
empire.
Slavetrade and ship-catering
made the town the second strongest in tax-income, right
after Lisbon. The ruling
catholic, oppressed "new cristians" of
jewish and islamic tradition, refugees from southern
Spain
and a rapidly growing number of enslaved African
citizens found together, in unions and families,
forming the craddle from where the oldest Creole
culture emerged. Ribeira
Grande de Santiago is the historical legacy
of three continents.
With Espaço
Pôr do Sol, the Place of the Sunset,
a first quality hotel has opened to welcome visitors
in the right atmosphere for cultural-historical
tourism.
Located on the
peninsula of Pedra Flupo, a quarter of an hour of walk
north of Cidade
Velha, the hotel
overviews the coastline and the sea - where
there is no land until Antarctica.
The huge terrace
offers sunny and shady places where to relax, have
a drink or meal. The well decorated restaurant
is the right ambiente for a good supper and a wine.
Rooms are equally
well equipped, all with private shower / WC, TV, AC
and sea-view.
The access
to the sweetwater
pool is limited to hotel-guests and friends of the
owner family.
Management
and service are excellent and as owners
live on the compound, even special wishes of guest
can be cared for.
Airport shuttle
and taxi services can be arranged for at any time.
The quality
in relation to price is outstanding.
